Uco Valley at the foot of the Andes mountains

World Malbec Day is an annual event celebrated on April 17, to commemorate the day on which President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of Argentina officially made it his mission to transform Argentina’s wine industry.

The Malbec grape hails originally from France, where it can be found in the wines of Cahors and the Languedoc, but it is in Argentina that the grape variety has been able to achieve the best expression of fruit intensity.   The key to Argentina’s success is the combination of long sunny days and cool nights afforded by the high altitude vineyards in the foothills of the Andes.

We have seized this opportunity to allow you to celebrate World Malbec Day with a couple of excellent Argentinian examples and to contrast them with a delicious Malbec from France.

A bargain-priced 6-bottle mixed case has two bottles of each of –

Les Volets Malbec 2022
IGP Haute Vallée de l’Aude
The Malbec ripens perfectly in the vineyards of the Pays Cathare around Carcassonne and Limoux, aided by the heat of the Mediterranean sun and balanced by the altitude and cooler nights of the Pyrenees.
This has a vibrant ruby colour with a gorgeous nose of crushed blueberries and a hint of parma violets.   It leads into a delicious mouthful of cassis and cranberry fruit with an uplifting fresh finish.  Very gluggable!

Pablo Y Walter Malbec 2023
Uco Valley, Argentina
Made from 25-year old vines, this is vinified in stainless steel to accentuate the natural vivacity of Malbec fruit.
Deep purple in colour, it has an intense nose of redcurrants, cassis and violets, matched by soft, juicy fruit and hint of chocolate.
A mouthwatering mouthful of Malbec!

Walter Bressia Sylvestra Malbec 2021
Uco Valley, Argentina
This is made from older vines, with a little bit of oak ageing.
Even deeper in colour, the nose is meatier and more aromatic with hints of violets.  On the palate this a more complex wine with great concentration, loads of soft bramble and blueberry fruit with hints of cedar and tobacco.
All you need is a perfectly cooked steak!
