Description
Azienda Uggiano, Chianti Colli Fiorentini
We have selected three lovely reds that highlight all that is delicious about Tuscan wines. Azienda Uggiano was founded by Giuseppe Losapio in the early 1970s at San Vincenzo a Torri and is now one of the leading producers with 100 hectares of hillside vineyards in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico zones. It is here that the Sangiovese varietal is king.
More recently, in 2019, they purchased the 15ha Tenuta Aquilaia estate in Maremma which is close to the coast in southern Tuscany. Here they have five red varietals – Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Alicante, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The Lospaio Family sold the Azienda to Uggiano’s young but experienced management team in 2015, who continue to maintain the high quality that we have enjoyed in the YMSWC over the years.
A Mixed Half Dozen consists of 2 bottles of each of:
Uggiano Governo 2022
IGT Toscano
Uggiano has revived the ancient Governo process to make this lovely Tuscan red. The Sangiovese grapes are harvested in late September. They are hand-picked, crushed and undergo 10-15 days’ fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless steel at 28-30°C. And this is where the Governo process comes in – up to 15% of the crop is left to dry for 30 days, to concentrate the sugars. These dried grapes are then added to the freshly fermented wine. This brings about a slow refermentation lasting 4 to 5 weeks, which enhances freshness, concentration and roundness in the finished wine.
It is medium/deep in colour with a bewitching nose of cherries and violets. On the palate it is bursting with cherries, damsons and sloes with a bitter twist at the finish, and very gentle tannins. The perfect Italian bistro red to accompany your pasta or pizza!
Uggiano Prestige Riserva 2020
DOCG Chianti Classico
The Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes are sourced from Uggiano’s vineyards. Vinification occurs in stainless steel tanks using selected yeasts. The must is pumped over the skins twice a day to extract colour and tannin. After 15 days the wine is racked to large oak botti (30-60 hl) for 14 months. The wine is refined in bottle for at least a further 12 months before release.
On the nose there are pronounced aromas of ripe black fruit, morello cherry with floral hints and a touch of lightly spicy oak. The palate is richly-flavoured with plum, wild cherry fruit, balsamic notes and firm but ripe tannins – leading on to a long, dry and savoury finish.
Tenuta Aquilaia Ciliegiolo 2022
DOC Maremma Toscana DOC
Ciliegiolo vines have been grown in Maremma since Etruscan times. In Italian Cilieglio means ‘little cherry’. The grapes are hand-harvested, then fermented at a controlled temperature (26° C) with maceration on skins for 15 days. Malolactic fermentation immediately follows alcoholic fermentation. The wine is then refined in stainless steel for 8 months.
True to its name the there are ripe black cherry aromas, warm and spicy with a hint of black pepper. On the palate there are soft, ripe cherry and plum flavours, supported by ripe tannins. There is good balancing acidity and a fresh, savour finish. Perfect with ravioli and a truffle sauce!
