Villa-Dria-wineryThis 60 hectare vineyard in Gascony has been a new venture, which was started 20 years ago by Jean-Pierre Drieux. The Romans were well-established in Gascony nearly 2000 years ago, where some of the farms were planted with the first grapes of the region, hence Jean-Pierre’s homage to this glorious past with the name of Villa Dria.

It is run according to strict ecological principles, using organic fertilisers and plant extracts and the use of geobiology to stimulate the natural defences of the vines and boost microbial activity in the soil.  Geobiology is relatively young field, utilising molecular biology and the effect of the earth’s magnetic fields on microorganisms.

By harmonising the geomagnetic energy of each parcel of vines, he is able to preserve the biodiversity of the terroir and enhance the expression of the terroir in his wines. The new winery is built around  a ‘magnetic well’ at the centre of the building.  This is based on the principles used by the ancients when building some of the magnificent cathedrals in Europe.

It may just look a bucket full of pebbles, but be prepared for a surprise! When you place a hand and arm over it you can feel a sensation like a draft of cool air – and yet there is no air flowing! Jean-Pierre believes that the positive energies create a harmonious environment which is perfect for a natural wine production

Whatever the methods, we were blown away by the wines when we tasted them in April, recognising them as having a wonderful purity of flavour and an aromatic complexity that is rarely seen in wines from Gascony.

We are offering a Mixed Dozen of six bottles of each of –

Villa Dria Colombard/Sauvignon 2016
IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Made from 70% Colombard and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, this is vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and matured on the lees to enhance the texture.
There is a mouthwatering herbaceous, nettley nose. It is fresh and clean in the mouth, full of tropical fruit and grapefruit flavours, finishing with wonderful racy acidity.
A great aperitif or perfect with grilled fish or pasta, and magnificent with blue cheeses.

Villa Dria Chardonnay/Gros Manseng 2015
IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Made from 50% Chardonnay and 50% Gros Manseng, a grape variety more usually found in Jurançon, this is vinified in a similar fashion.
The nose is more floral with citrus notes. On the palate it is richer, honeyed, with flavours of pineapple and mango, gentle acidity and a hint of spritz.
Another great aperitif, but goes well with white meats, fish and salads.

A Baker’s Dozen: Jean-Pierre makes a fabulous dessert wine.  We have been allocated a tiny quantity.  Anyone wanting a Baker’s Dozen can add one bottle onto the above Mixed Dozen Offer.  Just click below on the wine below and add it to your order!

Villa Dria Petit Manseng 2015 – only £8.95 per bottle.  One bottle per order.
IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Made from the Petit Manseng grape, which makes the fabled sweet or moelleux wines of the Jurançon appellation, this is a sublime pudding wine!
Lemon/straw in colour, it has an delightful honeyed nose with elements of quince and baked apples.  It is bursting with tropical fruit flavours, honey and apple with an underlying twist of lemon zest and marmalade.  It finishes cleanly with racy acidity and has great length.  Enjoy it, like the French, with Fois Gras.  But it is superb with blue cheeses, perfect with fruit salad, or decadently enjoyable on its own!
