Domaine du Pré Baron
Pre Baron_edited-1

The Domaine du Pré Baron is situated between Touraine and Sologne in the Loire Valley and has grown progressively to its current size of 45 hectares. Their very pure, racy Sauvignons have remained justifiably popular with members for over 20 years!  Jean-Luc Mardon is the 5th generation of vignerons and, since taking over from his father in 1995, we have noticed a steady improvement in concentration, due to a reduction in the yields.

The terroir is one of sandy soil on clay.  Each year the wines are monitored by the association of Terra Vitis, which ensures that every step from the vine to the bottle is carefully authorised and certified.  The essence of the philosophy is minimal intervention with a range of measures to preserve the biodiversity of the vineyard.  We are delighted with the 2015 vintage, which is riper than the lovely but more leafy 2014.

Domaine du Pré Semelé
Pre Semele vineyard and village2_edited-1

The picturesque village of Maimbray is located in this pretty valley just north of Sancerre.  The Domaine of Pré Semelé consists 18 hectares.  There are 45 different plots with a mix of Kimmeridgian clay and the limestone-rich Portlandian soil, which enhance the racy minerality of their wines. They embrace organic methods, use canopy management and green harvesting to maximise the ripening of the grapes and the concentration of the wine – all methods used extensively in New Zealand.  There are no pesticides or insecticides used in the vineyard.

Raimbault brothers

Julien and Clément Raimbault are the third generation of vignerons to run the domaine.  Clément is the winemaker, and having spent a number of years gaining experience in different areas, ranging from Te Mata in New Zealand to Gevrey Chambertin and three of the best known Sancerre growers.  He took over as the winemaker in 2009 and his focus is on emphasising the purity and balance of Sauvignon Blanc.

We are offering 3 bottles of each of –
Domaine du Pré Baron Sauvignon Blanc 2016
AOP Touraine Sauvignon
This is a marvellous affordable alternative to Sancerre.  It has a beguiling nose of elderflowers and hedgerows, and on the palate there are lots of gooseberry, blackcurrant leaf and elderflower cordial flavours.  It finishes with racy acidity and good length.  A perfect aperitif and superb with shellfish.  Summer in a glass! Available elsewhere for £8.99.

Domaine du Pré Semelé 2016
AOP Sancerre
We move up a step in complexity for Sauvignon Blanc with this delightful Sancerre.  With gooseberries on the nose, it has a delightful mouthfeel – almost peach and kiwi – with gooseberry and gentle grapefruit acidity towards the finish, and a long mineral finish.  Fantastic quality of Sancerre for this price!  Available elsewhere for £12.99.
