Clos malverne

Situated just outside Stellenbosch in the breath taking Devon Valley, lays the family owned Stellenbosch Wine Farm of Clos Malverne. The Prichard family have owned this beautiful vinyard since 1969.   Although the valley is shallow it acts as a natural receptacle for the morning summer mists that linger around Stellenbosch. The valley is cooler than surrounding areas, significantly lengthening the ripening season, resulting in very ripe grapes. The vineyards are mostly planted on the gently sloping terrain of the valley.

This is the flagship wine in their range.  It is made from 50%Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Pinotage and 15% Merlot. The wine spends 12-13 months in 225l French oak barrels. It has matured beautifully.  Deep in colour, with a mature rim, the nose is full of very ripe berry-like fruit with a touch of vanilla, which leads into an elegant silky mouthful of cassis fruit, with hints of sour cherries at the finish and a touch of liquorice.  There is still excellent acidity and the tannins have almost completely gone.   Very special and amazingly good, showing that South African wines can age as well as Cru Classé claret!
