Château la Bastide l’Optimée 2017

Domaine la Bastide L’Optimée Medaille d’Or Paris 2017
AOC Corbières
Now under the ownership of a large Chinese company, Mme Gao manages the domaine.  She has remained faithful to the recipe established by the former owner, Guilhem Durand.  The assemblage is 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, which is then aged carefully in oak barrels to improve the complexity of the wine while imparting just a hint of oak flavour.

It is deep purple in colour with some mature mahogany colours developing at the rim,  while the nose is gamey with hints of undergrowth and ripe brambles. On the palate there is wonderful blackberry concentration, with flavours of garrigue, spice, coffee and vanilla, finishing with soft tannins and dark chocolate and liquorice.

It cries out for game.  I last drank it at the château with jugged hare and it was a superb combination.  If you like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, you’ll love this!  An amazing bargain for this amount of power and complexity.
