Disaster strikes Château Bastide in Corbières

We have been buying the beautifully crafted wines of Guilhem Durand at Château Bastide in Corbières for several decades.  This summer we showcased a delicious trio of easy drinking Vin de Pays – his Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.  On our Christmas List, we have virtually sold out of his fabulous Vieilles Vignes Syrah and his complex, powerful Corbières cuvée -L’Optimé.  So I was very dismayed to get an email from him this week, detailing the massive damage that his vineyard suffered from a freak hailstorm in the summer.

“Having reached the age of 63 without a next generation of family members interested in taking over the business, I found myself in a predicament this summer, when a devastating hailstorm in July caused to our property immense damage including:
-Loss of 80 % of our harvest (about 800,000 €)
-The need to replace the full roof of our winery (350,000 €)
-Damage due to power loss, (110,000 €)
All of which propelled me to seek the aid of an investor in our company, a Chinese investor who is already rooted in the wine industry and who I believe is a good fit with our Château.”

We have sent our best wishes to Guilhem and Anne-Marie, and I will visit them again in May 2015.  Hopefully, the new investor will be able to stave off the financial catastrophe currently threatening them.
